Program Overview
Do you have an idea for a great mystery? Would you
like to write a crime novel, but don’t know where to begin? Do you need some
time for yourself just to work on these ideas?
Join Aaron Stander and accomplices in a four-day
retreat that will allow you to consider the basics of crime writing. Explore the
building blocks of the mystery and crime genre: openings and endings, scene
development, point of view, narrative voice, the art of detection and police
procedures.
Along the way you will have many opportunities to
write and share new sketches that could become part of your first crime book. In
the evenings there will be opportunities for readings, tutorials, extended
workshops and other non-felonious activities.
Participants should bring laptops and be willing to
share their work with other group members. While the focus will be on developing
new material, there may be time to examine prior manuscripts.
Aaron Stander is an
experienced teacher of writing and a crime writer. In the last decade he has
produced six crime novels, taught courses and workshops on writing and crime
fiction and reviewed mysteries for www.iloveamysterynewsletter.com.
He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He brings a love of writing, a
love of mysteries and a great sense of fun to his teaching.
